Sometimes we are in conflict with it, sometimes we need it to rescue us.

A key feature of science fiction is technology. Science Fiction is writing set in an imaginary future. The short stories “The Pedestrian” and “The Fun They Had” both share a similar theme of the potential dangers of technology, and teach readers about the importance of maintaining human relations in society.Presentation on theme: "“The Pedestrian”."- Presentation transcript: Both Bradley and Asimov are informing readers about the importance of human interaction, collaboration, and diversity, while at the time, warning them about the dangers of technology if the advancements are uncontrolled. The lack of human interaction is prevalent in both stories, and it can lead to segregation and the loss of diversity. The concept of having children learn at home due to the advancements in technology reduces their time outdoors having contact with other human beings their age, thus creating their own “bubble”. Instead, they have a room in the house that is treated as a classroom. Children have mechanical teachers who live in the same house as them, thus not requiring them to go to an actual school. Set in 2155, the story addresses the possible future of learning, and how technological advancements could be made to change the way of life forever. In “The Fun They Had” by Isaac Asimov, Margie, an eleven-year-old girl sees a paperback book for the first time and is intrigued by how children used to learn in the past. Each person in the city being isolated in their own “bubble” because of technology is a concept that is prevalent in both stories.

Another example where this idea can be seen is when the police car drives by his house, and that is the only house with the lights on in the whole city. The robotic nature can be seen when Leonard Mead can predict what everyone is watching based on the time. Also, it seems that all the residents operate like robots, with the same schedule every day without any change. Leonard reflects on his experiences, “In ten years of walking by night or day, for thousands of miles, he had never met another person walking, not once in all that time.” With technology being such a major part of everyone’s lives, they do not feel the need to step outdoors to get any sort of activity or face-to-face contact. In this text, Leonard Mead is just out for a nightly walk in the year 2053 AD, in which a police officer attempts to take him to a psychiatric center for behaving against the regular norm of the times.

Speaking about the texts specifically, “The Pedestrian” deals with technological disadvantages concerning physical activity and person-to-person interaction. These themes are created by setting each story years into the future, with their “flashbacks” being the “present” for the reader. Both of the short stories, “The Pedestrian” by Ray Bradbury and “The Fun They Had” by Isaac Asimov, develop a central theme regarding the possible negative effects of technological advancements in society.
